Albaola

Albaola Faktoria and the bay of Pasaia are key references for the maritime heritage of Gipuzkoa.

With the construction of historical vessels as its main activity, Albaola Itsas Kultur Faktoria, located in Pasai San Pedro, is an innovative space where traditional maritime craftsmanship and technology are recovered and showcased to the public. Since 2013, a replica of the San Juan has been under construction, a 16th-century Basque whaling galleon that sank in 1565 in Newfoundland. The launching of the ship in 2025 marked the completion of its land-based construction phase and the beginning of a new stage at sea. At present, among many other activities, special attention is given to the restoration of the Ozentziyo, the last traditional wooden fishing boat from the port of Donostia.

Pasaia Itsas Festibala
In May 2026, Pasaia Itsas Festibala will once again be celebrated—an impressive maritime gathering organised every two years by Albaola and the Town Council of Pasaia to honour the town’s rich maritime legacy. It is a festival of maritime culture and traditional vessels, some of which can be visited. Visitors can also enjoy gastronomy, music, and traditional sea-related trades.
