Church of Santa Maria, Donostia–san Sebastian

Built against the southern side of Mount Urgull, in the heart of the old quarter, the Basilica of Santa María del Coro is one of the most visited architectural works in the city.

The present construction was erected on the site of a Romanesque church, enlarged in the Gothic-Renaissance style in the seventeenth century. After a series of catastrophes, it was rebuilt between 1743 and 1774 to create the impressive basilica we can see today. The Baroque edifice contains Gothic, Churrigueresque and neo-classical elements and has a magnificent Plateresque doorway. It is rectangular in plan, with a semicircular apse and other secondary rooms. The lofty central aisle is topped by star vaulting, with the choir at one end. The high altar features the image of Our Lady of the Choir, the city's patron.
