She was the first woman to receive the National Painting Prize in 1959 for her work Un paisaje de Arráyoz.
Menchu Gal (Irun, 7th January 1918 – Irun, 12th March 2008), one of the leading female Spanish artists of the 20 th century, focussed her work on brightly coloured landscapes and portraits. She was the first woman to receive the National Painting Prize in 1959 for her work Un paisaje de Arráyoz. She exhibited her works in art centres all over the world, and many of them can be seen in the former Sancho de Urdanibia hospital in Irun.
