The Rural Paradise and traditional markets
The Rural Paradise is the heart of Gipuzkoa, a vast maze of grass and green hills that has sheltered the purest essence of Basque culture, its customs and its ancient language, Basque.
Amidst the narrow, fertile valleys there are innumerable unique sights to see in a genuine rural atmosphere. Stroke some sheep, chat to the local farmers or get down and dirty making bread or cheese. And in this little green paradise, you absolutely must discover the traditional markets, one of the real signs of identity of rural Gipuzkoa. In Tolosa, the marvellous Tinglado market is held every Saturday. If you happen to be in the Goierri region on a Wednesday, don't miss the market at Ordizia. The event traces its origins back to the 11th–12th centuries and it attracts sellers of farm produce from across the region (livestock is sold at special fairs 2 or 3 times a year).
