Sara Alonso On Tour Gipuzkoan

Sara Alonso
On Tour

Sara Alonso (Donostia, 1999) is one of the best international trail running athletes and came third in the demanding “Salomon Golden Trail Series” in 2022. Running around Gipuzkoa with her is an adventure that is exciting, but, above all, is fun. Let’s go!

Zegama – Tolosa

We start off, of course, in Zegama, the place where Sara’s life changed. We’ll cover a section of the famous Zegama – Aizkorri race with her and stop in Zegama to talk to its mayor, Joseba Eizagirre, where the famous St. Martin’s Day is celebrated (11th of November), with its cheese and cattle competition. After a big meal in Zegama, we head for Tolosa to walk around its streets, look at shops, visit the TOPIC – International Puppet Museum – to finish off the day enjoying life and having a good chop for dinner, this time, at the Tolosa Pelota Court. A perfect plan.

Orio – Zarautz

We head for the coast to experience the art of rowing with the company, Begi-Bistan in the cradle of this sport, Orio. From there, we’ll put on our sports shoes to jog along the Talaia trail to arrive in Zarautz going along the entire coast; the views are spectacular. Once we’re on Zarautz beach, the longest on the coast of Gipuzkoa, we’ll go for a walk watching the waves and we’ll continue on to its old quarter, stopping to eat a few bar snacks, such as the Okamika. The day couldn’t be complete without surfing, so we finish off with a class from Shelter which… Sara did her best.

Basque Coast Geo-park

We continue to go along the coast and we come across something that is not only a genuine feature of Gipuzkoa but is also inevitable: rain. We gather our strength with a full breakfast at the Hotel Arbe, enjoying the views, while we prepare ourselves mentally for what is to come, a long walk along the Basque Coast Geopark and its 60 million years of history told through its endless flysch. From Mutriku to Getaria, via Deba and Zumaia, we stop at the most characteristic spots in this UNESCO Global Geopark and finish off with the reward of tasting that most typical local dish, some excellent octopus.

Oñati

The interior of Gipuzkoa was awaiting us with its magical places and valleys. This time we got up early to see the sunrise alongside the Urkulu reservoir, a treat that nature has left us near Oñati. And close by, at a trot, we also found one of the greatest treasures in the province: the Sanctuary of Arantzazu. There, we delve into its history, its creation, its origins and... suddenly, we find ourselves in the Arrikrutz caves. A real adventure!

Andoain - Amasa

We set off by train from Sara's home town, Donostia, and had a coffee to get our strength back and headed for Andoain, one of our favourite places in Gipuzkoa. There, we started out the day by moving our bodies on the ascent up Mount Adarra, an ideal training area. After enjoying (and sweating a bit) on this small but fun mountain, we take a mountain bike and go for a ride along the Leitzaran Greenway, a fantastic place to get away from the city. And, to top it all off, nothing less than a visit to the Hika winery run by the well-known chef Roberto Ruiz, a temple of gastronomy and txakoli in a unique setting.

Pasaia – Donostia

We started the day by heading off to Pasaia for a stroll through its streets, to see its colourful houses, its traditions... and to cross by boat over to San Pedro, where we visited the Albaola Marítime Factory, a museum that pays homage to the Basque fishermen and their adventures in Newfoundland. Incredible as it may seem, here they are making a replica of the Nao San Juan, a ship from that period. After the visit, we set off at a trot back to Donostia along a really enjoyable route, and when we get there, we find a surprise... what could it be?
