Gipuzkoa is probably the territory in Euskadi where all the Basque singularities are expressed most intensely, from the language to the traditions that help bond the community and give it its distinctive character.
Euskara (the Basque language) is one of Gipuzkoa's deepest markers of identity and a living language that is part of the daily life of its people. The geography of the region, marked by valleys and mountains, has also helped preserve a rich popular heritage full of myths, rituals, music, and dances… which go beyond mere folklore to define a unique culture. Today, all these traditions thrive, especially through a calendar that fills towns and cities with life throughout the year: festivals, sports, music, dances, and all kinds of performances bring traditions to life within a vibrant and participatory cultural fabric.
It is one of the few pre-Indo-European languages that have survived, with no known linguistic connection to any other language, and its origins remain a mystery.
In an increasingly diverse Gipuzkoa, Euskera has become a bridge to unite citizens, an ancestral language that comes alive every day on the lips of its inhabitants with words as beautiful as ortzadar ("the horn of the sky") for rainbow, which you can see when the sun rises after the xiri-miri ("misty rain"). Or when a local invites you musutruk ("in exchange for a kiss"), i.e. for free, to a sagardo ("apple wine" or cider). Have a go at the Basque language, become an euskaldun ("the one who has the Basque language") for a few days. For visitors, learning a few words in Euskera is the best way to connect with the culture and character of the region. Ongi Etorri, welcome.
